How to clean and maintain a Kamado grill?

Today, we focus on grill maintenance and cleaning. Read on to learn how to ensure your grill has a long lifespan.

Kamado ceramic grills are renowned for their excellent heat retention, versatility, and durability. Proper maintenance of these grills ensures they last for years and always deliver the best grilling experience. Here, we share with you a comprehensive guide on how to clean and maintain your Kamado grill.

After each use:

  1. Remove ash: Allow the grill to cool down after use, then remove the ash accumulated in the bottom ash drawer. Use an ash scoop or a dedicated ash pan to facilitate the process.

  2. Clean grates: While the grates are still warm, use a grill brush to remove food residues. Stainless steel or brass brushes are suitable, but avoid wire brushes as they can damage the ceramic surface.

  3. Wipe interior and exterior surfaces: Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe away grease splatters and other debris from the grill’s body.

Monthly cleaning

  1. Thorough cleaning of the grates: Remove the grates and wash them with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and allow them to dry completely before reinstalling.
  2. Check and clean ventilation vents: Ensure that both the top and bottom ventilation vents are clean and free from blockages. If necessary, use a small brush or compressed air to remove any accumulated dirt.

Seasonal cleaning: 2-3 times a year

  1. Deep cleaning: After many uses, grease and soot can accumulate on the interior surfaces of the grill. Remove all internal parts (grates, heat shields) and clean them separately.
  2. Burn-off method: Close the bottom and top ventilation vents, raise the temperature to about 260°C, and let the grill run for approximately 30 minutes. This will burn off any remaining food residue and grease. After cooling down, remove any ash left on the interior surfaces.
  3. Check seals and ceramic parts: Regularly inspect the condition of the ceramic parts and seals. If you notice cracks or wear, replace damaged parts. Feel free to contact us if needed.

Maintenance of different parts

  1. Seals and gaskets:
    • Check seals: Kamado grill seals ensure control of airflow and should be in good condition. If seals are worn or damaged, replace them with new ones.
  2. Ceramic parts:
    • Avoid chemical cleaners: Ceramic parts do not require chemical cleaners as ceramics are quite durable and easy to clean. Use clean water and a soft brush for this purpose.
  3. Metal parts:
    • Prevent corrosion: Check the condition of metal parts such as hinges and handles. To prevent corrosion, lightly oil them as needed.

Winter maintenance when the grill is not in use:

  1. Clean the grill before storage: Before storing the grill for the winter season, clean it thoroughly.
  2. Protect against weather conditions: If the grill will be kept outdoors, use a high-quality grill cover to protect it from moisture and dirt. Ideally, store the grill under a roof or in a garage.

Well done! Now your grill is well maintained, and thanks to that, the grill's lifespan will be extended.
